Vintage Platinum Pure Silver Handmade "Phoenix" Fountain Pen C. 1978- 18K White Gold Nib. This pure silver hand carved fountain pen for sale, called "Big Shine", is one that was never offered in the Platinum catalog in 1978. The requirements for special ordering this pen was well... See you had to have been born in 1901.
This was the year the emperor at the time was born. And that emperor was none other than Hirohito. While we was a young emperor during WWII. He is widely credited for leading the modernization of Japan in the 1960-70's. Turning 77, called "kijyu", is a highly honored event in Japan.
Being born in the same year as the emperor made the honor even more special. The condition of the pen is outstanding.
I could only find a few small surface level scratches when looking at the pen really close up. The artwork is clean and crisp. The 18K white gold nib is also in beautiful condition.
How this fountain pen was made is equally special. Platinum contracted famed silver and goldsmith master Obuchi Mitsumori of Obuchi Genki to hand make each pen. Obuchi Genki is renowned for their intricate pure silver and gold sculpture artwork. The name "Big Shine" is the name of their famous line of pure silver hand carved Japanese tea pots. I'm not sure why the pen is also called "Big Shine". Information is limited on this. It weighs more than most silver pens I have held this size. The images on the pen are two phoenix birds facing each other, surrounded by clouds. The phoenix, believed in Japanese legend to live forever, is used to symbolize the 77th birthday. The detail of the phoenix artwork is exquisite.
Each feature of the bird's long tail is intricately carved. The Obuchi logo is visible in tiny detail below the birds. Obuchi Mitsumori carved the name of the person turning 77 on the back of the pen between the two birds' tail features. The clouds above and below the phoenix birds were made by a special mold that was acid etched and pressed into the silver. These clouds have incredibly tight etch marks giving the pen a wonderful texture. You find yourself unconsciously rubbing your fingers along them. The nib is 18K white gold, a perfect color match for the silver. This is a special pen.
It's incredible to think it was handmade specially for each person turning 77 in 1978. And by silver and goldsmith Obuchi Mitsumori, a living master. I don't know how many were made, but I know the number was low. This will make an amazing addition to your fountain pen collection.
Whether you collect vintage Japanese pens, handmade pens or works of art, I know you will truly love this pen. Model: 1978 Platinum Big Shine "Phoenix". NIB: 18-karat White Gold Medium Chuji NIB. Accents: Hand carved artwork and acid etching. 5 5/16in (135mm) capped/ 4 9/16in (117mm) uncapped/ 6in (153mm) posted.
